A quiet weekend

A quiet weekend this weekend. Just a few smallish fish - but a huge shoal of fish came very close to the shoreline. They were too quick for me - and were gone as quickly as they arrived. Nice to see, 'though.

Ah well....there's always next time....

Check out The Alternative Abu Dhabi site - it's a great place to find out more about Abu Dhabi.

Remora - Nice Fish!

It's been almost a year since I added to this blog, but I've still been busy catching (or at least fishing!). Here's one I caught on the 1st September 2008.

The fish is a remora, and they like to stick themselves to the underside of very large fish, such as dolphins and sharks. See it close-up.... you can see the suckers....

Sand Storm from Saudi Arabia

Well, I went to my usual place to fish yesterday, and it was an absolute disaster. We were experiencing a sand-storm from Saudi Arabia at the time. The sea was very rough, and will a big swell. I hardly had a bite, and no fish whatsoever. This is the first time I haven't caught anything when fishing here.

Ah well......there's always next time!

Plenty of Sea Bream!

Hi,

Had a great day out today - caught more than 30 fish from the rocks. Mostly Sea Bream, with a few Sherri and the odd snapper. My best fish was a good sized Sea Bream - around 1Kg.

The weather was very strange - very overcast, and looked as though it was going to rain.

It didn't put the fish off, 'though - they were biting like there was no tomorrow.

I arrived around 12:30pm - just before high tide. There was quite a swell on, but it calmed down later, and we even got a little sun in the late aftternoon. The guy fishing next to me caught a large Hammour - looked to be around 5 kg.

More next time.........

High Tides / Low Tides - Abu Dhabi

Ever wonder how to find out the times for high tides and low tides before setting off for Sea Fishing trip around Abu Dhabi?

Here's a great web site which gives a free 7-day high/low tide prediciton:

http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/Easytide/EasyTide/ShowPrediction.aspx?PortID=4210&PredictionLength=7

The link above is preset to give the prediction for the next 7 days for Mina Zayed port in Abu Dhabi- but you can use the site for many other places world-wide - just select from a list of other locations.

I usually check it before deciding what time of day to aim for when going fishing.

Have fun!

Another day of Sea Fishing in Abu Dhabi!

Well, it seems that I will get a chance to have an extra day sea fishing in Abu Dhabi this week, since we have a national holiday on Thursday 10th Jan. This means that I get an extra day to spend as I like to do - fishing off the rocks near Emirates Palace.

Maybe this weekend I will catch something a bit bigger than last weekend.

......always waiting for that really big one!

I saw a video clip of someone catching baracuda off Abu Dhabi on YouTube - you can see it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kND2iMyT2_Q

They don't really treat the fish with much respect - but it's a nice fish!

If any readers are also fishing this weekend - good luck and let us all know how you get on.

First trip of the New Year

Today, Saturday 5th January, was my first chance to go fishing in the New Year. I went to my 'usual' spot - opposite the Emirates Palace and Public Beach, on the rocks near the lighthouse. I didn't have a great day, but it was very pleasant as the weather was beautiful. The conditions were very calm, and I managed to catch around 12-15 smallish fish (a couple of blackspot snappers and the rest seabream). No pictures - but they were pretty small anyhow.

I did try (as per my previous posting) a new rig - with the weight fixed to a sliding swivel, but couldn't seem to register the bites very well, so I resorted to my 'tried and tested' method of the weight being tied directly to the end of my line, and two hooks tied further up the line. This method always provides good firm bites as long as you keep the line tight between the reel and the end weight.

Hopefully will be out again next weekend (11th/12th Jan.).........will see how I get on then.
